Great article in the Boston Globe about how the Franklin Park Zoo uses positive reinforcement methods to vaccinate Little Joe the Gorilla against H1N1. Gorillas are susceptible to the same viruses as humans, so being able to easily vaccinate them without the use of tranquilizers is key to keeping them healthy and preventing the spread of disease. Karen Pryor talks about how the Franklin Park Zoo uses clicker training with Little Joe and other exotic animals in her latest book, Reaching the Animal Mind. You can see it for yourself in this fascinating video.
