Dogs in shelter

Filed in - training - shelter dogs - teaching

Hello! This is my first effort at blogging.

I am a retired virologist and have trained dogs by various methods for over 40 yrs.  I have also taught obedience classes at all levels thru Open. Presently I work at the SPCA Humane Shelter of Bexar County in San Antonio TX with the dogs that need help to be adoptable.  I have progressed thru the years from Pearsall tedhniques, Koehler method, positive reinforcement and finally graduated to using the clicker with positive reinforcement.  The shelter requires that we use no force, pinch collars, choke collars, etc.  A group from our obedience club, San Antonio Dog Training Club, work at the shelter. This  program has been in effect for about 6 yrs.

My biggest concern is transferring the behaviors we teach to shelter workers and volunteers.  We get the dogs to behave, but only for us reliably.  Part of the problem is a constant change in shelter help and in volunteers. Any suggestions would be welcome.
