People used to believe that infants didn't have feelings, and so babies were operated on without anesthesia and left to cry when hungry, fed on schedules.
Today, we know that was wrong, babies DO have feelings, and it's important to listen to the opinions of babies and respond to their needs.
Perhaps inherited from that human tradition, dog trainers like the "Dog Whisperer" still take that approach, flooding fearful dogs with frightening stimuli, treating dogs as though their feelings don't matter. But not so different from human babies, dogs are very intelligent, they do have feelings, and more effective learning takes place when trainers appreciate that. Here's a clip where I was eavesdropping on a conversation between Charlie and Tigerlily. I hope it is a reminder of the complexity of canine intelligence and sensitivity.
